Domaine Huber-Verdereau — Volnay

The young and very talented Thiébault Huber is originally from Alsace and is a former sommelier.  He took over the family estate in 1994, which had been leased out to others for the previous 20 years (Thiébault’s grandfather was a vigneron, but his father chose a career in medicine). He started farming Biodynamically in 2002 and the entire estate is is now Demeter-certified Biodynamic. Thiebault’s wines from Volnay, Pommard and Puligny-Montrachet are dense, concentrated, vibrant and alive with complex flavors and aromas, and tend to blossom over many years in the bottle. He also produces one of the finest examples of Burgundy’s great sparkling wine – Crémant de Bourgogne, made from 100% Pinot Noir from his vineyards just below Volnay.

2010 Bourgogne Chardonnay $25 >>

2010 did not produce a lot of wine in Burgundy. The wine it did produce, however, is stunning. The first 2010s from top producers are just  arriving on our shores, and you are advised to grab yours before they are gone.

Biodynamic farming and winemaking are at the core of Thiébault Huber’s program, which produces wines that are vibrant, alive, and flat-out delicious. This 2010 white Burg is from a 1.25-acre parcel just below Meursault, and was vinified and aged in tank, never seeing any wood. Crisp, bright, precise, and great fruit richness. Slurp it up!  SPW

NV – Cremant de Bourgogne $26 >>

A delicious sparkling wine, 100% Pinot Noir, from the same parcels of vines that are used for his Bourgogne Rouge – four parcels of old vines just below Volnay. One of the world’s great values in sparkling wine!

2006 Volnay, Frémiets 1er $65 >>

“A very subtle touch of wood frames a really lovely and classic nose of red and blue pinot fruit that also displays a touch of the floral that are also captured by the rich, full and sweet flavors where the supporting structural elements possess better phenolic ripeness, all wrapped in a delicate yet punchy finish. In a word, lovely. 88/2010+”

2006 Pommard $40 >>

“A more deeply pitched nose mixes both red and dark berry fruit and earth notes that is both fresh and vibrant and this sense of energy continues onto the sweet and intense middle weight flavors. A classic Pommard. 87/2011+”

2006 Pommard, Bertins 1er $65 >>

“A discreet hint of oak sets off a red berry fruit nose that has undertones of earth and the sauvage that can also be found on the round, intense and firmly structured flavors that are very Pommard in basic character and culminate in a delicious finish of admirable length. This will need time to come together. 88/2013+”
