Domaine Jean-Marc Millot — Nuits St.-Georges

The winery and cellars are in ancient Nuits St.-Georges, and Jean-Marc Millot’s 17 acres of vineyard holdings are concentrated in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, and Echezeaux. Jean-Marc took over the domaine in 1990, but has had most of the Grand Cru sites since only 1998 (these parcels were inherited by his wife, Christine.) His wines are the epitome of elegance, purity, and understatement, with a beautiful sense of finesse, harmony and overall balance.

2009 Côte de Nuits-Villages, Aux Faulques $38 >>

(a 1.8 ha monopole in Comblanchien). Reduction blocks an evaluation of the nose but the sauvage-infused medium-bodied flavors possess good volume on the round and quite forward flavors that possess a touch of backend rusticity along with good balance and length. This should be good for its level. (86-89)/2014+

2009 Vosne-Romanée $72 >>

Mild reduction doesn’t completely hide the Vosne spice that can also be found on the generous, rich and notably more complex medium weight flavors that possess good extract that confers a seductive and velvety mouth feel to the long, balanced and delicious finish. A quality villages. (88-91)/2016+

2009 Vosne-Romanée, les Suchots 1er $95 >>

(from a .29 ha parcel raised in 25% new wood). Here the nose is clean with quite ripe aromas of black raspberry and cherry-liqueur aromas trimmed in an abundance of spice nuances. The energetic, sappy and opulent medium-bodied flavors possess an ample amount of tannin-buffering dry extract that renders them almost invisible on the lingering finish. This is very Vosne in basic character and worth considering. (89-92)/2017+

2009 Echezeaux Grand Cru $145 >>

(a 1.05 ha total from parcels in Echézeaux du Dessus, Poulaillères and Clos St. Denis measuring .69, .20 and .16 ha, respectively). Moderate wood influence sets off spicy and admirably fresh black fruit and warm earth aromas that precede the rich and quite seductively textured and palate staining flavors that possess good volume and a taut muscularity on the long and reasonably powerful finish. This is really quite good if not truly exceptional. (90-92)/2017+

2009 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru $165 >>

(from a .38 ha parcel). An exceptionally fresh and expressive nose offers up notes of humus, damp earth, red currant and very subtle spice hints that are followed by serious and somber middle weight flavors that possess good energy and a mouth coating finish that displays both excellent power and length. (91-93)/2019+

2009 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru $195 >>

(from a .2 ha parcel immediately below Poulaillères in Echézeaux). An airy, highly spiced and cool red berry, earth and plum suffused nose introduces rich, powerful and overtly muscled medium weight plus flavors that also possess excellent authority on the palate staining and impressively long finish. This is the epitome of ‘power without weight’ and should age beautifully well over the medium-term. (92-94)/2019+

2008 Echézeaux Grand Cru $109 >>

2008 Echézeaux:  (a 1.05 ha total from parcels in Echézeaux du Dessus, Poulaillères and Clos St. Denis measuring .69, .20 and .16 ha, respectively).  Moderate reduction prevents an evaluation of the nose but the concentrated, rich and serious medium weight flavors are delicious and solidly complex, all wrapped a lingering finish that coats the mouth.  This is lovely and avoids any sense of rusticity.  (89-92)/2015+

2008 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru $109 >>

2008 Clos Vougeot:  (from a .38 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis).  A noticeable if discreet touch of wood frames more deeply pitched and slightly riper aromas of red and blue berry fruit that complement well the rich, full and round flavors that possess an attractive mouth feel on the precise, intense and persistent finish where the usual youthful austerity of Clos de Vougeot surfaces.  (89-92)/2016+
