Domaine Marc Roy - Gevrey-Chambertin
Marc Roy’s grandfather started the estate with just a few tiny parcels of vines in one of Burgundy’s most famous villages, Gevrey-Chambertin. In 2003 Marc’s daughter Alexandrine took control of the domaine, which has now grown to just under 10 acres.
Alexandrine has quickly become one of Burgundy’s brightest rising stars, and is a regular on U.S. shores. She’s here often, promoting her wines and charming wine lovers coast-to-coast, as well as making wines in Oregon for Phelps Creek Vineyard in the Columbia Gorge. “Alex” is a regular at the annual International Pinot Noir Celebration in McMinnville, OR, where she has made legions of friends and fans over the years.
All of the domaine’s holdings are classified at the Village level, as they own no 1er Cru or Grand Cru land. The wines consistently outperform their “humble” origins however, as noted by leading publications and critics who dole out praise and high scores year after year.
Alexandrine produces three different bottlings of Gevrey-Chambertin, starting with the “Vieilles Vignes”, produced from her oldest parcels in the village, now 70+ years old. “Clos Prieur” is a single-vineyard cuvée, from her parcel below the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin. The jewel in the crown is “Cuvée Alexandrine”, produced from only the tiny millerandage grapes, the little shot-berries that have a high skin-to-juice ratio and produce a superior level of depth and concentration. These grapes are harvested individually by hand, and this wine is not made every year. Additionally, they have a tiny parcel of Chardonnay in the neighboring village of Marsannay, where she makes tiny amounts of a rich and minerally Marsannay “Les Champs Perdrix”.

2009 Marsannay, les Champs Perdrix $40 >>
White peaches and pears and a touch of citrus on the nose, followed by rich and precise flavors that carry on to a punchy and bone-dry finish. This is a succulent and delicious white, from Alexandrine Roy’s tiny parcel high on the slope at the southern end of the Marsannay appellation. A high concentration of limestone and sea fossils in the soils make this wine come alive with freshness and verve. Yum! SPW
2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes $60 >>
(from ~70 year old vines). A very fresh and ripe blue berry and red currant infused nose that leads to distinctly earthy medium-bodied flavors that possess solid complexity plus good length and balance. 88/2014+
2009 Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos Prieur $69 >>
A more elegant and also more restrained nose of cool, airy and complex dark berry fruit and pungent earth aromas complement the slightly sauvage, detailed, minerally and pure middle weight flavors that exude intensity and vibrancy, all wrapped in a balanced and solidly persistent finish. This is notably finer than the old vines cuvée. 90/2015+
2009 Gevrey-Chambertin, Cuvée Alexandrine $95 >>
(made 100% from tiny “millerandage” grapes, or shot berries which give much higher solid to liquid ratios; it is not made every vintage). A discreet touch of wood frames ripe and cool extract of red pinot and dark berry fruit aromas that possess excellent mid-palate concentration as the level of dry extract is impressive as it renders the moderately firm tannic spine almost invisible on the explosive and driving finish. This is a terrific effort for its level and absolutely worth considering. 92/2016+
