Domaine J-J Confuron — Premeaux
One of Burgundy’s most highly-regarded estates, the 20 acres of Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron is now controlled by Sophie Meunier-Confuron and her husband Alain Meunier, who work together as a team in the vineyards and the cellar. They took over from Sophie’s father in 1988, and converted all parcels to organic viticulture in 1990. The wines are brilliant examples of the concept of “power without weight”, with great depth of flavors wrapped up in refinement and elegance. The entire range is outstanding here – the Côte de Nuits-Villages is a tremendous value for the quality, and their Romanée-Saint Vivant is a reference standard for one of the most refined of all Grand Crus.

2007 Bourgogne, La Jeunesse SOLD OUT:>>
- A notably ripe nose for the vintage features notes of red and blue fruit, earth and a touch of jerky that merges into very rich, round and full-bodied flavors for its level, all wrapped in a delicious, persistent and nicely complex finish. Lovely. (85-87)/2010+
2007 Côte de Nuits-Villages, Les Vignots $38:>> (35% new wood and the rest in one-year old wood).
- Here the nose is even earthier with similar red pinot fruit, underbrush and the same jerky hint that transfers over to the rich, round and supple flavors that are unusually forward on the mid-palate but tighten up on the balanced and persistent finish. This too delivers better than average quality for its level. (86-89)/2011+
2007 Nuits-St. Georges – les Fleurières $50>>
- (from a parcel that sits right below the Nuits 1er Les Pruliers). Light wood spice doesn’t detract from earthy and expressive red berry fruit aromas that introduce round, supple and vibrant middle weight flavors that are easy but not simple and culminate in a delicious, punchy and persistent finish. While not an elegant wine, it certainly is more refined than one typically finds for a Nuits villages. Lovely and worth a look. 89 BH
2007 Chambolle-Musigny $60>>
- A pretty and reasonably fresh nose of red and blue fruit aromas that also offer floral hints, especially violet notes, that precede a rich, round and supple mid-palate. (83-86)/2011+
2007 Chambolle-Musigny 1er $85:>> (a blend of Les Feusselottes and Les Chatelots).
- A touch of wood influence frames somewhat more elegant dark berry fruit aromas trimmed in a bit of anise, earth and underbrush that carry over to the rich, full and generous flavors that are almost lush in their texture yet just manage to avoid losing focus on the vibrant and pure finish. (88-90)/2012+
2007 Clos de Vougeot $129>> (from 40+ year old vines situated at the very top of the hill hard by the Château).
- Moderate wood influence sets off a reticent but ripe and fresh nose of discreet red pinot fruit, damp earth and forest floor that is picked up by the rich, full and palate coating big-bodied flavors that possess excellent intensity and this is sufficiently ripe that there is a trace of mocha and chocolate on the finish as well as a hint of warmth. This is also more forward and less overtly austere than one typically expects from young Clos de Vougeot. (90-93)/2014+
2007 Romanée St.-Vivant $225>> (from vines planted in 1922).
- As it usually is, this is considerably more elegant and refined with airy, pure and stylish aromas that possess real lift as well as a beautiful and beguiling array of spice elements on the ripe red pinot fruit that is quite dense and this density continues onto the supple, intense and focused middle weight flavors that display an almost aggressive minerality as well as a delicious, long and explosive finish. This is simply at another level compared to all the other wines in the range. (92-94)/2015+
