Domaine J-J Confuron — Premeaux

One of Burgundy’s most highly-regarded estates, the 20 acres of Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron is now controlled by Sophie Meunier-Confuron and her husband Alain Meunier, who work together as a team in the vineyards and the cellar. They took over from Sophie’s father in 1988, and converted all parcels to organic viticulture in 1990. The wines are brilliant examples of the concept of “power without weight”, with great depth of flavors wrapped up in refinement and elegance. The entire range is outstanding here – the Côte de Nuits-Villages is a tremendous value for the quality, and their Romanée-Saint Vivant is a reference standard for one of the most refined of all Grand Crus.

    2006 Côte de Nuits-Villages Les Vignottes $38 >>

  • From a 3-acre parcel planted in 1972. “A ripe and very fresh nose of earthy dark berry fruit is trimmed in subtle new wood aromas that introduce rich, round and nicely concentrated flavors that possess fine intensity and balance, all wrapped in a finish that delivers good length at this level. (86-89)/2010+”

    2006 Chambolle-Musigny $60 >>

  • From 3 separate parcels totaling just under 3 acres, planted in 1957 & 1965. “As one would expect, this is definitely more elegant with a ripe and pretty mix of blue and red berry aromas that are also trimmed in a deft touch of wood spice that is picked up on the supple and detailed medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a dusty and slightly dry finish that may or may not completely round out. (86-88)/2011+”

    2006 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru $78 >>

  • From tiny parcels of Les Feuselottes and Les Châtelots, totaling .86 acres planted in 1967 & 1947 – among the oldest vines of the domaine, which are plowed by horse. “Here is another small step up in aromatic elegance with a lovely blend of notably ripe yet airy dark berry fruit and violet nuances that precede round, sweet and finer flavors that possess good depth and richness plus notable concentration on the delicious and admirably long finish. I like this as it’s very Chambolle in character and should age well over the medium term. (89-91)/2012+”

    2006 Nuits-St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots $90 >>

  • From .74 acres on the Vosne-Romanée border planted in 1950. “An appealing nose of black cherry and spiced plum introduces extremely rich, suave and palate soaking medium full flavors blessed with ample dry extract that confers a textured and velvety character to the powerful, long and stylish finish. This is an interesting combination of muscle and seductiveness. Crafted in a relatively forward style but well worth a look. (90-92)/2012+”

    2006 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru $135 >>

  • From 1.23 acres at the top of the Clos, right next to the Chateau. “… a mix of earthy dark berry fruit and game hints continuing onto the strikingly rich and broad-shouldered flavors that are also suave yet powerful, all while retaining excellent focus and balance on the impressively long finish. (90-93)/2014+”

    2006 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru $275 >>

  • From 1.23 acres of perhaps the most elegant of all Grand Crus – planted in 1929. 5 cases imported. “As is usually the case, there is an extra dimension of aromatic depth and breadth with superior elegance as well though that is of course to be expected. The notably ripe yet fresh and pure nose ranges from red, blue and black crushed fruit aromas nuanced by spice, floral and subtle earth hints that are picked up on the intense, concentrated and hugely long finish. This has just as much dry extract as the Clos de Vougeot and the length here is stunning. (91-94)/2014+ (One of the “DON’T MISS” Wines of the vintage!)
