Domaine René Leclerc — Gevrey-Chambertin
The always outspoken and iconoclastic René Leclerc — a true character, flowing white mane and all - took over his half of the family domaine in 1976. They have 29 acres in and around Gevrey-Chambertin, including the sought after 1èr Crus Lavaut St. Jacques and Combe aux Moines, and Grand Cru Griotte Chambertin that is drop-dead gorgeous. René's son François is now in charge of vinification at the domaine, and if possible the wines are getting even better (François is also making wines from his own tiny estate, and we'll have miniscule quantities of the Domaine François Leclerc wine to offer as well.). The vines average 50-80 years old. The wines are the epitome of grace and elegance, understated yet very concentrated and pure. New oak is generally not in use here — 0% for 2005 and again in 2006.

2006 Bourgogne Rouge $25 >>
2006 Gevrey-Chambertin $40 >>
- "earthy red berry fruit aromas leading to fresh middle weight flavors that carry a bit more volume on the textured round and more serious finish that offers good balance. (86-88)/2011+"
2006 Gevrey-Chambertin — Clos Prieur $44 >>
- "(from 50+ year old vines in the villages portion of the vineyard). A more deeply pitched array of earthy and underbrush-infused red and dark berry fruit aromas laced with a hint of crushed stone slides into more serious flavors that are sweet and energetic and this too is blessed with solid finishing balance. (86-89)/2012+"
2006 Gevrey-Chambertin les Champeaux 1er Cru $65 >>
- "dark berry fruit and hints of underbrush and game that continue onto the richer, fuller and finer medium-bodied flavors that possess an attractively textured, round and supple mouth feel on the lovely, balanced and nicely energetic finish. (88-90)/2012+"
2006 Gevrey-Chambertin — Lavaux-St. Jacques 1er Cru $65 >>
- "mineral-driven and exceptionally fresh flavors possess the natural elegance and vibrancy of a classic Lavaut, all wrapped in a pure, precise and vibrant finish that delivers admirable length. Lovely balance and punch here on the dusty and linear finish. (89-91)/2012+"
2006 Gevrey-Chambertin — Combe aux Moines 1er Cru $66 >>
- "(from 80+ year old vines). As one would reasonably expect, this is bigger and richer with a decidedly masculine character to the layered game-suffused dark berry fruit nose that leads to earthy and underbrush nuances on the powerful and solidly concentrated big-bodied flavors brimming with dry extract on the textured, precise and energetic finish. (88-91)/2012"
2006 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru $120 >>
- "elegant, airy and refined extract of red pinot fruit nose that merges seamlessly into rich and relatively full flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that firms up moderately on the sappy and mouth coating finish. This is pretty rather than truly profound though if it can add a bit more depth with time in bottle, that may change. For the moment however, this appears to possess very good to excellent potential. (90-92)/2013+"
